History of our Active School Flag 2013/2014
In 2013/2014 we formed an Active School Committee, which consisted of a couple pupils from each class. Mr. Horan and Mr. Flynn were guiding us along the way. First we had to come up with a slogan and we had a competition for that which Daniel Leahy from 3rd class won that. At lunch time we started "Buddy Circuits" for Juniors, Seniors, First and Second classes. We made up games to do with them. It was great because we got to play games with them and organize their lunch time. We did this for four weeks and hopefully over the coming years we will increase this to maybe a whole term. Every Wednesday for the month of May we were dropped at the Church or the Terrace in Coachford and we all walked to school together with the teachers, pupils and some of the parents. We called this ‘’ Walk On Wednesdays’’ and it was a great success.
Also lunch time leagues were established for big break. In term 1 we played soccer leagues. In term 2 we played in Olympic Handball leagues and then in term 3 we played Tag Rugby leagues. We had to learn how to play Olympic Handball and tag rugby because these were new games that we never played before. I enjoyed tag rugby the most because I never played it before and it was a new challenge. We had a Skip-a-thon to raise money for the Irish Heart Foundation and we collected over €2,000. Every big break that rained we tried our best to do about 10-20 quick exercises to keep 'active' in the classroom. We had to do these exercises at our places. The teacher on yard duty supervised us while we traveled to each class to help with the exercises.
During active school week we ran a mile which was seven laps of our yard and field combined and some of our teachers timed us to see if we could beat our old time the next day. We had an activities morning for every class and we brought in board games to have some fun being active in a non competitive way. We also learned how to play Spikeball, Badminton and many more sports. That’s how we received our very first Active School Flag.

Active School Flag 2018/2019
This year our school is engaging with the Active School Flag initiative. This Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland aims to get schools more active, more often. It is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.
What does an active school look like?
Active schools ensure that all classes are timetabled for 60 minutes of PE every week. A broad and balanced PE curriculum is delivered, at all class levels, by the teachers. Active schools promote inclusive physical activity throughout the school day: At lunch time on two days, the infants and 1st & 2nd class participate in 'Buddy circuits' which are a series of games led by the 6th class pupils. Furthermore, on rainy days when the children cannot go outside, they complete 5 exercises in the classroom to keep them physically active.
Keep an eye on our Active School headings to see what we are up to!
This year we formed a new active school committee with three to four children from each classroom. Mr. Reen was guiding us along the way. Each class thought of a new slogan. First and second class won .Our new slogan is “Being active is cool, stay active at school”. In term one, we organised Christmas soccer leagues. Mr. Reen picked names from a hat for captains. Mr. Reen also refereed the games. We played the games at big break. Benjamin Champion’s team won and got trophies. We are currently doing a spring basketball league. Another fun activity was ‘Walk on Wednesday’ (WOW). WOW was when all students of Coachford N.S were invited to walk from St. Patrick’s church or the terrace to our school in the morning before school.
Then in term two we did buddy circuits. Buddy circuits were when the sixth class students made up cool games to do with juniors, seniors, first and second. They did buddy circuits every big break. During the winter the fifth class students did ‘Give me 5!’ This was when it was raining at big break; the students of fifth would take turns going around to the class rooms doing cool exercises. All classes also did 10 @ 10. It was a fun activity every Wednesday at 10 for 10 minutes. Each teacher did regular movement and activity breaks throughout the day such as ‘Just dance’ and ‘Go noodle’ also. We did our running initiative which we called ‘Run around Europe’. This was a great success as all classes got to exercise and learn about different European cities.
During Active School week we did some new and fun activities. We played rounders, badminton, volleyball, frisbee golf, puc fada, cic fada, parachute games, racket games, orienteering, whole school relays and much more. On Thursday we got a visit from ‘Fun Fitness’. This term the third to sixth class started swimming .We go to leisure world in Bishopstown .It is great fun. In June we will be holding an active bingo fundraiser to raise money for new PE equipment.
